It’s a very common question, what are veneers? I believe it to be common to be misinformed as well. There are a few main reasons we use veneers in dentistry, and many secondary reasons.
Veneers are a very thin porcelain shell that are cemented to the front of the tooth. The porcelain is made by a ceramic lab professional, hand crafted based on the desired outcome. Some people want longer teeth, rounder teeth, a different color tooth. Some people have misshapen teeth, or teeth that are way smaller than their other teeth, or have large gaps between their teeth. This can not always be completed with bleaching or braces, and that is the main reason for veneers.
How does one get veneers? The procedure is fairly simple, however the planning is extremely important. At our office we first have them made on a model in wax. This way you and your doctor can make sure we have reached your desired outcome. We then transfer that to the teeth by making temporary veneers, which you would wear for a couple weeks to make sure we like the way they look and feel. Once we like everything, we get numb, shave a small amount of the enamel so that the ceramist knows how to make the veneers and so that we get a good, predictable, and long lasting bond with our cement. The temporary veneers are then placed back on, and in two weeks you come back and get your permanent porcelain veneers cemented in. Easy as that!
If you have any other questions regarding veneers please contact our office and we will get you the answers you need.
