Hello everyone. We’re going to keep it short and sweet this month. I want to talk about oral cancer.
What are some of the main, commonly known reasons for getting oral cancer. Smoking and drinking. There it is. Pretty simple and easy to understand.
There is one other thing, however, that is showing a VERY strong connection to developing oral cancer. That thing is HPV, or human pappiloma virus. We have all heard of this, no doubt. A few years back there was a vaccine developed, which made many headlines. Many us, in fact, are vaccinated. With that in mind, there are still A LOT of people who have the virus, and it is very easily transmittable.
There needs to be a very serious (and pretty uncomfortable) conversation about the connection of HPV and oral cancer. The rates of cancer correlated with HPV are rising each year. The rates of people with HPV, who smoke and drink, are even higher. It doesn’t seem like a lot, but knowing these little things can save a life. We as doctors need to discuss it more, and patients need to be made aware. I hope this helps a little.
Take care, and enjoy the holidays!
